Where the Wild Things Are: The Magic of African Safari

By: African Travel Inc.

No matter how many wildlife documentaries you鈥檝e watched鈥攐r how many Instagram reels you鈥檝e scrolled through鈥攏othing prepares you for the moment you see your first lion in the wild or when a herd of elephants passes silently just feet away.

Across Africa, these are the kinds of encounters that stay with you forever. It鈥檚 undeniably unforgettable鈥攕ome even describe it as life-changing.

What makes these encounters even more meaningful is the backdrop of conservation. Over recent decades, many wildlife populations have rebounded thanks to protected areas, anti-poaching efforts, community-led initiatives, and sustainable tourism. Take the black rhino鈥攕till critically endangered, yet its numbers have more than doubled in the past 30 years. These aren鈥檛 just success stories on paper; they鈥檙e playing out in real time across Africa鈥檚 wild landscapes鈥攁nd there’s no better place to witness them than in the heart of the continent鈥檚 iconic wilderness.听

South Africa: Classic Safaris and Big 5 Encounters

South Africa remains one of the top choices for first-time safari-goers鈥攁nd for good reason. The Greater Kruger area is famous for consistent Big 5 sightings: lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. While Kruger National Park itself is an attraction, private reserves like Sabi Sand offer a more intimate and exclusive experience. With limited guests, off-road access, and expert guides, visitors enjoy close-up wildlife encounters with fewer crowds.

Luxury safari lodges elevate the journey even further, combining adventure with comfort. Many travelers pair their safari with a few days exploring Cape Town鈥檚 vibrant culture and coastline, creating a well-rounded introduction to Africa.

Kenya & Tanzania: The Great Migration and Beyond

The Great Migration is one of Africa鈥檚 most iconic wildlife spectacles, yet it鈥檚 often misunderstood. Rather than a single event, it鈥檚 a year-round, circular journey of over a million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, moving between Tanzania鈥檚 Serengeti and Kenya鈥檚 Masai Mara in search of fresh grazing. With expert planning, travelers can witness dramatic moments鈥攍ike river crossings or calving season鈥攁t the right place and time.听

Tanzania: Legendary Parks and Vast Wilderness

Beyond the Great Migration, Tanzania is home to some of Africa鈥檚 most iconic national parks, including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. These areas offer an incredible diversity of landscapes and species, from vast savannahs teeming with big cats to volcanic calderas sheltering dense populations of wildlife. Private concessions within the national parks provide an added layer of exclusivity, allowing for off-road game drives, walking safaris, and night drives.听

Kenya: Conservation and Rare Species Encounters

Kenya, the birthplace of safari, blends 鈥淥ut of Africa鈥 charm with forward-thinking conservation. The Masai Mara is not only a key migration corridor but also home to one of the highest concentrations of large predators in Africa. In northern Kenya, Laikipia and Samburu offer a network of private conservancies that provide more personalized, crowd-free safari experiences.

This region also presents a chance to see rare and endemic species such as the Grevy鈥檚 zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Somali ostrich. Travelers can engage with local communities, join anti-poaching patrols, or track wildlife alongside rangers鈥攄eepening their connection to both the land and its people.

Botswana: Luxury in the Wild

Botswana offers one of Africa鈥檚 most rewarding safari experiences for those who value space, solitude, and unspoiled landscapes. With its high-value, low-impact approach to tourism, it鈥檚 a destination where wildlife thrives and visitors are few.

In the Okavango Delta鈥攁 UNESCO World Heritage Site鈥攕afaris unfold on land and water. Mokoro rides glide through floodplains, while game drives and bush walks reveal lions, leopards, and African wild dogs. Camps like Xigera and Tawana offer exceptional luxury without losing the sense of being deep in the wild.

The stark Makgadikgadi Pans offer a completely different perspective鈥攅ndless salt flats, meerkat encounters at sunrise, and walks with San Bushmen that add a cultural layer to the safari experience. Each year from late December to March, the Makgadikgadi Pans host Africa鈥檚 second-largest mammal migration, as around 30,000 zebras journey from the Okavango Delta to feast on the fresh grasses brought by the rains, before retracing their route north.

Rwanda: Life-Changing Gorilla Encounters

For primate enthusiasts, few experiences rival a trek to see mountain gorillas in Rwanda鈥檚 Volcanoes National Park. Once a country marked by conflict, Rwanda has become a model for conservation and tourism development. Today, it鈥檚 one of the safest and most progressive countries in Africa.

Gorilla trekking is both humbling and exhilarating鈥攁n intimate, once-in-a-lifetime encounter that leaves a deep impact. Rwanda also offers golden monkey treks, cultural experiences, and luxury eco-lodges that support local communities and conservation efforts.

Wilderness Bisate

These unforgettable wildlife encounters aren鈥檛 just stories鈥攖hey鈥檙e experiences you have to see for yourself. There鈥檚 no better time than now to start planning your African adventure and create memories that will last a lifetime.听

10 Amazing Lion Facts

By: Lion World Travel

Nothing represents the essence of Africa more than the symbol of the lion.

Lions are one of Africa鈥檚 most recognizable animals in the wilderness. Lions signify courage, strength, and power. Spending up to 20 hours a day sleeping or resting, they are the laziest of the big cats.

1. LIONS ARE SOCIAL

The most sociable of the big cats, they live in prides of related females and their offspring. The typical pride consists of ten to fifteen lions, with adult females, their cubs, and a few males.

2. LIONS NEED TO EAT EVERY DAY

Lions can go up to four days without drinking water, but they need to eat every day. Adult lionesses eat about 11 pounds of meat each day, while adult males eat 16 pounds or more. They prey on large herbivores like zebra and wildebeest, and occasionally feed on smaller animals like mice, birds, hares, and lizards.

3. LIONESSES DO THE HUNTING

Lionesses are the primary hunters. They are smaller, more agile than males and use teamwork to bring an animal down. After a successful hunt, all the lions in the pride share the meal. There is a pecking order, with adult males eating first, followed by the lionesses and finally the cubs.

4.

Lions hunt by ambush. Fanning out, they form a semicircle, with the smaller lionesses herding the prey towards the center. A lion鈥檚 vision is roughly six times more sensitive to light than humans, giving them a distinct advantage when hunting at night.

Lion鈥檚 claws reach up to 1陆 inches in length, allowing for incredible control when going in for a kill. Lions can reach speeds of up to 50 miles/hour and can jump up to 36 feet.鈥

5. LIONS DO NOT LIVE IN JUNGLES

Although lions are known as the 鈥渒ing of the jungle鈥, lions in Africa do not actually live in a jungle. Their primary habitats are Africa鈥檚 grasslands and plains. Three of the five largest lion populations are found in the savannas of鈥

6. HOW LIONS COMMUNICATE

Lions communicate by using roars, growls, moans, and grunts. A lion’s roar can be heard up to 5 miles away as a warning to other predators and to protect their territory. Also, by leaving scent markings and through visual signals, such as the darkness of the mane. They rub their heads on one another as an act of bonding and to spread the “family scent.鈥

 7. RAISING THEIR CUBS

Females in the pride tend to give birth around the same time, allowing for multiple litters to be raised together. Lionesses take care of their cubs until they are two or three. The mother then goes through estrus (heat cycle) and carries another litter. During this time the pride forces the male lion cubs and some female lion cubs out.

8.

When they are born, the cubs eyes are closed, opening when they are three weeks old.鈥疶his is when they are vulnerable to attack from large birds, and even male lions. A lioness will keep her cubs hidden for six weeks until they are old enough to follow the pride.鈥 The cubs are full of life and grow up playing with the other youngsters in the pride building strength and family bonds.

9. LIONS ARE THE SECOND LARGEST BIG CAT

Only slightly smaller than the Siberian tiger, the lion is the second largest of the big cats, with a muscular deep-chested body. Unlike other big cats that are solitary hunters, lions are social hunters. Male lions can weigh up to 550 pounds, while female lions weigh up to 390 pounds.

10. LIONS CAN CLIMB TREES

Tree-climbing lions can be found in鈥 飞颈迟丑,鈥 补苍诲鈥痓eing the best places to see them. They have also been spotted in the鈥 The reason why lions climb trees is to get away from flies and insects on the ground, and they have a higher vantage point to see if any other animals are nearby.

By: Team of African Travel Inc.

Embarking on an African safari is a dream for many travelers, but there are common misconceptions that can overshadow the true essence of this magnificent continent. African safaris are captivating, memorable, and meaningful. 10 Surprises from African Safaris

An African safari is a lifetime dream for many travelers drawn to the wildlife, game drives, and endless vistas.

Overseas Adventure Travel presents the safari experience through the eyes and lenses of two Overseas Adventure Travel (O.A.T.) travelers, Barbara Robert and Petra Graves. Their photos bring would-be adventurers up close and personal to the unforgettable and surprising sights of safari life.

翱.础.罢.鈥檚 is one of its popular safaris. The trip is 17 days, with 12 nights in tented camps and lodges, and up to 19 game-viewing drives. Travelers visit Kafue National Park in Zambia, Chobe National Park in Botswana, and Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe.

1.Views from above — 鈥淔loating over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon, we witnessed a large pod of hippos gathered in the ever-shrinking pools during the Dry Season,鈥 said Barbara Robert, who traveled with O.A.T. on its   in October 2016. Safari Serengeti is a 13-day safari, including four nights in a private O.A.T. camp and up to eight game-viewing drives. Highlights include Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unflooded caldera in the world.

2. Cooling off — 鈥淟ate October is the peak of the Dry Season,鈥 said Robert.  鈥淭hese zebras weren’t drinking — they were just having a spa moment! This scene was somewhere in the Serengeti of Tanzania.鈥

3. It鈥檚 the little things — The 鈥淲et Season鈥 brings out the frogs in the Okavanga Delta of Botswana. 鈥淭his fellow, balanced on a reed, was photographed while on a mokoro (type of canoe) ride through the narrow channels of the Delta,鈥 said Robert, who traveled with O.A.T. on its in 2017.

4. Girls and goats — Driving in Tanzania from Tarangire National Park to the Serengeti, Robert met this young Maasai herder with her goats. 鈥淭he young boys tend the cattle, the girls get the goats,鈥 she recalled.

5. Oh, the birds! Travelers expect to be excited to see game on safari. Discovering myriad beautiful birds with their incredible colors may come as a surprise. This photo by O.A.T. traveler Petra Graves illustrates the wonder of our winged friends.

6. Always keeping watch — Petra Graves鈥 lens captured this lion on alert, well-positioned to spot potential prey and dangers in the vast landscape. Graves has traveled on 翱.础.罢.鈥檚 .

7. Close encounters — 鈥淥ut of the lush green bush appeared this large鈥痯achyderm. We paused in hushed wonder,鈥 said Robert. She captured this scene in Botswana during the 鈥淕reen Season,鈥 which refers to the warm rainy months in Africa, a period that varies depending on the region.

8. Luck of Mother Nature 鈥撯疊arbara Robert shot this photo on the Chobe River in Botswana during the rainy season. 鈥淚f it hasn鈥檛 rained for four days, the elephants will come to the river to drink. There is plenty of water in the puddles in the forest, but after four days it has gone foul and not fit to drink. Smart elephants! Had we been there a day earlier, there would have been no elephants at the river.鈥

9. Migration 鈥 鈥淭he wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is something to behold,鈥 marveled Robert. 鈥淥ur guide at the end of the day asked, 鈥楬ow many animals do you think you saw today?鈥 The answer: Not a few thousand but, tens of thousands!鈥

10. African sunsets 鈥 This stunning image by Petra Graves illustrate the striking colors of the sunset along with the serendipity of birds in flight at just the right moment.

In survey after survey, up to 76% of consumers say that they鈥檇 rather spend their money on experiences than things. They further cite 鈥渕eaning,鈥 鈥渋nspiration,鈥 鈥渇un,鈥 and 鈥渓earning鈥 as outcomes they seek. Travelers can count on all of the above on one of Overseas Adventure Travel鈥檚 small group adventures. These include hands-on activities that connect them to the local culture, such as visits to workshops where local artisans demonstrate traditional crafts. Visitors can roll up their sleeves and join in, and if they like, purchase the local wares.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a win-win,鈥 says O.A.T. Vice Chairman Harriet Lewis. 鈥淥ur travelers get to engage with local people and learn something new, and our hosts gain support for the industries their families rely on.鈥 Oftentimes, the activities occur during 翱.础.罢.鈥檚 signature A Day in the Life experiences which are woven into the trips; or though visits to sites supported by Grand Circle Foundation, O.A.T鈥檚 non-profit charitable organization. Here are just ten of the local crafts supported:

1. Australia: Aboriginal Dot Paintings

The distinctive Aboriginal dot designs are not random, but are filled with symbols that tell a visual story. Dot painting has been around for millennia, but exploded in the 1970s in Papunya near Alice Springs, where indigenous artists used it as a secret language. Other Aboriginal communities embraced the form, and today they adhere to strict rules about which techniques, symbols, and stories belong to which tribes. O.A.T. travelers are urged to only buy authentic, ethically sourced works that bear the official Indigenous Art Code seal, the 鈥済old standard鈥 among reputable merchants.

2. Laos: Traditional Weaving

While the men of the poor Laotian village of Tin Keo farm or seek jobs in the city, the women create fabulous, colorful textiles. It started as a way to be sociable with their neighbors. Today, these industrious ladies can earn a windfall of $70-80 a month selling their fabrics, all the while improving their skills and preserving an important cultural legacy.

3. Portugal: Azulejo tiles

笔辞谤迟辞鈥檚 Banco de Materiais is an unusual bank: you can deposit antique tiles and withdraw some for free. Portugal鈥檚 signature blue and white azulejo tiles date to Moorish times. The Banco safeguards these treasures, and sometimes the fire department will even collect tiles off at-risk buildings and deliver them to the bank. Employees then study and catalog the tiles and preserve them in wooden boxes where visitors can admire or buy them.

4. Kenya and Tanzania: Maasai beadwork

A Maasai collar can be the shape and size of a dinnerplate, decorated with bold-colored beads in intricate patterns. But to the Maasai people, these aren鈥檛 just pretty baubles: they tell individual life stories, map out villages, indicate marital and social status, and represent the culture. O.A.T. travelers can purchase them directly from artists when they experience A Day in the Life of a local village such as Mto Wa Mbu.

5. India: Embroidery and Textiles

India鈥檚 Ranthambore National Park is famed as a sanctuary for Bengal tigers, and while some locals have resorted to poaching them, others have found a more ethical and sustainable enterprise. Through their Dhonk and Dastkar handicraft cooperatives, local Indian women teach artisanal skills so members may earn a living outside of poaching by creating embroidery, clothing, and gifts. Supported by Grand Circle Foundation, the cooperatives now celebrate the tigers whose allure attracts a steady stream of travelers鈥攁nd crafts customers.

6. Morocco: Henna tattoos

Known as mendhi, the use of henna to paint the body with intricate patterns is a centuries-old Berber art believed to promote harmony and ward off evil. The (non-permanent) tattoos are also a symbol of female solidarity, as O.A.T. travelers discover when they visit the Imik Smik Women’s Association for Rural Development, which provides skills training for women in the A茂t Benhaddou area. As a token of friendship, members invite women visitors to participate in a traditional henna ceremony.

7. Peru: Chinchero weaving

High in the Sacred Valley, Chinchero was a 16th-century Inca emperor’s estate, as well as a resting place on the Inca Royal Road. Today, this small village is known for its weaving industry. It is entirely managed by the local women, who use plants (and in some cases, bugs) to produce their dyes. O.A.T. travelers converse with the weavers about village life and observe the process of designing and creating these vibrant garments.

8. Japan: Hakone woodcraft

Hakone yosegi zaiku is a form of marquetry that creates intricate patterns by joining together pieces of wood. The colors鈥攔ed, white, yellow, black, and green鈥攁re not created through inks, but are the natural wood shades. Today, yosegi zaiku is popular all over Japan, but there are only about 50 artisans making it, all in the Hakone/Odawara area. O.A.T. brings travelers to the Hamamatsuya workshop to meet its fourth-generation owner, and see a demonstration.

9. Vietnam: Bat Trang Pottery and Ceramics

The village of Bat Trang may lie on the Red River, but it鈥檚 the area鈥檚 rich white clay that has made its pottery renowned for seven centuries. O.A.T. travelers have plenty of time to browse the shops, but also visit the home and studio of an artisan family and get to make their own ceramic pieces.

10. Turkey: carpet weaving

Rug weaving in Anatolia began with the arrival of Turkic tribes from Central Asia, and was a prominent art form by the 12th century. Then as now, most carpetmakers were women who worked anonymously. The process is intensively laborious, and prices are based on the intricacy of the design, quality of the materials, and the number of knots per square centimeter.

Why the Green Season is Great in Africa

By

We are letting you in on a safari secret – the Green Season! If you have no idea what the Green Season is, that is ok,  will fill you in. Suffice to say, if you have been wanting to get the best value in luxury safaris, the Green Season is the answer you seek.

What is the Green Season?

The Green Season is also known as the wet season, or rainy season, in Africa. Its timing varies from East Africa to Southern Africa, and it can be the best time to take a safari.

When is the Green Season?

In East Africa (including Kenya and Tanzania), you have the short rains that often start in November, and then the long rains that usually start in April.

In Southern Africa (including Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe), the Green Season can run from about December to March. Of course, anything to do with weather is unpredictable, and the timing of the rains fluctuates every year.

You may think that these warm, rainy months would be an unfavorable time of year for travelers to go on safari. However, many safari connoisseurs will argue that traveling during the Green Season perhaps the best times to visit. Want to know why?

Baby Zebra by Kate Berg

“Having been to Africa during both High Season and Green Season, I can say they are equally amazing in different ways. They each have their own charm. It is less expensive during the Green Season; it is less crowded and best of all, there are lots of baby animals.” -鈥Lucille Sive, CEO Africa Division, The Travel Corporation

Top Reasons to Travel to Africa during the Green Season

#1 鈥 All the Baby Animals

Without a doubt, this is a huge reward for visiting during the Green Season. The rains signal to the animals that food will soon be in abundance. This means it is the best time to have babies, so the wide-open plains of鈥痑re filled with adorable cubs, pups, calves, foals and fawns.

This abundance also draws in the predators, such as lions, who follow the large herds of zebras and wildebeest in search of their own meals. It is a time of abundance for all animals. If someone is particularly keen on seeing the big cats of Africa on their safari, there is a good chance of seeing the 鈥渢hrill of a chase鈥 during the Green Season in East Africa.

Similarly, the Green Season is a great time in southern African countries to spot babies, from giraffes to buffalo to zebra, it is their natural cycle to give birth during times of plenty and forthcoming rains are a time to celebrate for all in the animal kingdom.

#2 – Fewer People

Amazingly, with the arrival of new animals, there are fewer travelers. While Africa is known for its wide-open wild spaces any time of year, during the Green Season travelers often feel like they have access to their own personal wildlife paradise. In East Africa, for example, it is possible to be out driving on safari for a couple of hours before coming across another safari vehicle.

At Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp – No Crowds, Except the Animals!
#3 – It is Turning Green

Arriving on safari when the Green Season is underway means being blessed with a more colorful safari experience. Some, or most, of the classically dry scrublands and grasses will have come to life and turned green. For photographers, this can make for some more lively, high contrast images.

Kudu in Chobe National Park, during the Green Season by Red Hunt

“On one trip to Africa I visited Tanzania and Botswana at the start of their Green Seasons. In the Serengeti, we were surrounded by zebra and wildebeest as far as we could see, and not another safari vehicle in sight, it felt truly special! What I noticed most on that trip were the colors coming to life. It wasn’t all dry and dusty like on my previous trip. Vegetation was coming to life, the smells were different, and it really made photography more exciting. The kudu photo above was one of my favorite shots taken during that Green Season trip.” -鈥Red Hunt, VP Marketing, Lion World Travel

#4 – Stretch Your Dollars Further

At  we are all about Affordable Luxury, and the Green Season enables everyone to get a little extra value for their money. During peak season, prices are at their highest. During low season, you will get a better value. If your or your clients are flexible on timing for a safari, planning a safari for the start or end of the Green Season can mean being rewarded with the combination of optimal wildlife viewing and lower prices.

#5 – The Migration is Always in Motion

Did you know that the migration in East Africa never stops? Since the seasonal rains vary, the enormous herds of zebra and wildebeest are always on the move. So, no matter what season, if someone is planning to visit both the  and , they will likely witness the greatest migration on earth.

#6 – Perfect Timing with Holidays

With the Green Season covering the coldest months of the year for Americans, anyone yearning for more warmth should consider a Green Season safari. The timing is perfect to escape for part of winter. As vacation days can be limited, having the Green Season cover popular holidays from Thanksgiving through to spring break, means travelers, , have lots of opportunities to turn holiday time into safari time.

With great rates, fewer travelers, and cute baby animals to see, who wouldn鈥檛 want to visit Africa on a safari during the Green Season?

For more than 56 years, Lion World Travel has been focused on offering the best Affordable Luxury Safaris. Making safari dreams come true during the Green Season, or any season, Lion World can work with you and your clients to create a custom safari experience for any budget. Sustainable Luxury Travel in Africa

By听Sara Verk,

Traveling is more than just visiting new places. It鈥檚 about the enriching experiences when we explore and learn about the history, culture and people of the places that we visit. We need to be aware of our environment, be ecologically responsible, travel lightly and not leave a large footprint on the land we鈥檙e exploring. We feel it is vital to protect the people, places and wildlife of Africa in order to be able to share it with travelers in the future. We are so happy that we鈥檙e not alone in this vision, as there are many safari lodges and hotels in Africa who are adopting eco-friendly and ethical business practices.

At Lion World Travel we are committed to supporting our partners in Africa who are serious about the environment. Here are five African lodges/hotels that have embraced the spirit of sustainable travel.

1.听Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, South Africa

Grootbos offers five-star luxury in the Western Cape and is a leading example of sustainable eco-tourism. The nature reserve is home to 791 plant species, including 100 endangered plant species, and 1000-year-old milkwood forests. The owners run an extensive conservation and horticulture programs to preserve the flora and have a true passion for the environment. They have even formed a Non-Profit Organization to help other hospitality businesses implement their own 鈥榞reen鈥 initiatives.

They even brought in an arborist to oversee the protection of trees and their roots. Mombo is 100% solar powered thereby reducing energy consumption and fuel, while a reverse osmosis water filtration system provides guests with high-quality drinking water. Grey water is treated in an above ground sewage plant, ensuring that the water is clean before being allowed to enter the natural environment. They only use approved eco-friendly detergents and chemicals.

3.听Bushmans Kloof, South Africa

At Bushmans Kloof indigenous herbs and vegetables are picked daily from their organic garden and incorporated into dishes on the menu. All vegetable waste is composted, minimizing landfill contribution and reducing the need for chemicals to fertilize and enrich the soil in their garden.

There is a rich array of local indigenous wildlife here, including the rare Cape Leopard. Along with The TreadRight Foundation, Cheetah Outreach and The Cape Leopard Trust, they have purchased seven Anatolian Shepherd dogs to act as livestock guardian dogs to safeguard against these Cape Leopards.

The moments that turned us into lifelong explorers.

By Tyler Protano-Goodwin, Marketing Executive at Audley Travel

In the world of travel we talk a lot about our favorite countries, but what about the places we first fell in love with? The place that changed our idea of travel forever.

Where did you realize that travel was something that you would never stop doing? Below we share our own stories about how we went from people interested in travel to people determined to see as much of the world as possible.

An Italian adventure with family

Jo Tudisco Guntert,

The first international trip I took was when I went to Italy with my family after my high school graduation. My mom was determined that we would experience our Italian heritage before I left for college and I quote 鈥渢ake one more family trip together since we鈥檒l never have the time again鈥. We look back now and laugh since that trip was just the first of what has now been 9 international adventures. However, that first trip to Italy was everything. I fell in love with the ancient streets, the delicious smells, the friendly shouts and laughter from vendors and voyeurs alike. I fell in love with the glitter of sunshine off Venetian waterways and the smell of grapefruit on the worn road to Pompeii. Most importantly I fell in love with what it feels like to discover new places, to notice details that we miss in our everyday lives, to glimpse a world so outside our own that our thoughts can鈥檛 help but turn to dreams. When I tell people that I love travel, that trip with my family is the one that I think of.

Sharing the gift of travel in Colombia

Matthew Nilsson,

Standing on the Pacific shores of Colombia at daybreak, my brother beside me, we watched as newborn turtles made their way to the sea for the first time. Having lived in Colombia for over a year I was already enchanted by this vibrant country, but the joy of watching travel transform someone else was a new feeling entirely. I was elated to share the moment with my brother who was at the time in the Navy. After our experience in Colombia it wasn鈥檛 a week before we were both home and I got a call from him to say that the moment had swayed his decision to leave the Navy and move on to the next chapter in his life. An unlikely affirmation for myself that travel is unwavering in its generosity to transform anyone who is open to it.

Connecting with Irish culture

Shannon Dirrane,

Before Freshman year of college I traveled to the island, Inis Mor in Ireland with my dad for a family wedding. The beauty of the island was overwhelming, but what changed my idea of travel forever was the people. A culture so similar to my own was in reality so unique and different. Tea and scones are a way for the people to connect with one another and the packed pubs foster important face to face interactions. The lively sense of community and the hardworking spirit of the locals inspired me to return, I felt a sense of calm in a place that puts such a high value on connection. I went back and lived in Ireland for close to a year and afterwards have kept exploring 鈥 eager to find more places where the people are more important than the landscapes.

Jerpoint Farm Kilkenny - local farmer giving a guided tour and sheep dog demo

Witnessing the unknown in Tanzania

Jack Morris,

It鈥檚 a long journey by light aircraft to get to Greystoke Camp in western Tanzania, and this is partly the reason why it鈥檚 so special. The camp sits on a lake and I knew before arriving that it would be an experience not to forget. The lake itself is crystal clear, drinkable in fact, and you can see the cychlids and yellowbelly fish swimming every which way. Plus there was the reason I鈥檇 come all this way 鈥 trekking into the jungle to visit the M community of chimpanzees. Clambering through the thick jungle vines and through the steep rocky streams of the Mahale Mountains to find them was something from a childhood dream. Traveling to see things I couldn鈥檛 have even imagined felt almost mystical in a sense and it was in this moment, staring at the chimps, that I knew I would never stop visiting new places.
